I shall now change my study to a new spider, one that I commonly find on regular journeys on my property. This spider belongs to the Salticea family but is more commonly known as the Jumping Spider. These spiders have a particular focus on whatever moves in front of them and I most often find them sitting on a high place and they may even jump on me if I pass close enough. This spider will live only ten months. This spider has the same hunting technique as the Black Bellied Tarantula that we studied in a previous chapter. In my first experiment I was determined to find out how far it could jump. To do this I passed a stick in front of the spider in hope that it would jump. After repeating this process multiple times I found that on almost every occasion it would jump on the stick and have recorded that the farthest jump it was able to make was about nine inches. But let us move on now to what this small spider eats. This spider is a hunter and does not sit and wait for its prey. If you have ever watched this spider eat you would instantly find that it is a blood sucker. Being so, the spider will kill its prey instead of devouring its prey whole. I usually find it eating a fly or cricket but in my next experiment I put a bee into the cage with the spider. The spider then lunged at the bee, tackled it and just like the Black Bellied Tarantula administered a strike to the neck and the bee lay motionless.
